LEXINGTON — Franklin County’s varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams are entered in a preseason jamboree Saturday at Rockbridge County High School.
The Eagles’ varsity squad is coming off a season in which it won 20 matches, captured the Piedmont District championship, lost a 3-2 match to Colonial Forge in the Class 6 Region B tournament’s championship match and fell to eventual state champion Frank Cox in the Class 6 state quarterfinals.
FCHS captured region titles in volleyball in 1986 and 1987 under the coaching guidance of Jerry Saleeby, was the region runner-up and state quarterfinalist in 2003 in the final year of Nancy Castillo’s term as head coach and claimed last year’s success in Kaitlyn Dula’s first year at the helm.
FCHS has a home scrimmage scheduled for Tuesday, August 20 against Salem.
The Eagles’ season opener is against Magna Vista at home on Tuesday, August 27.
FCHS begins play in the Blue Ridge District this season.
League foe Lord Botetourt is the two-time reigning Class 3 state champion.
Middle School volleyball tryouts begin today
Benjamin Franklin Middle School volleyball tryouts begin Friday and conclude Saturday.
Candidates for the squad must be able to attend both days.
Friday’s session is from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
There are two sessions on Saturday: the first from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and the second from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

BFMS golf tryouts are Monday
Benjamin Franklin Middle School golf tryouts are Monday, August 12 at Willow Creek Country Club.
Tryouts are from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
A shuttle will take students to Willow Creek after school.
Rides home must be provided by parents.

Practice for Benjamin Franklin Middle School’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams begins Wednesday, August 14 at the middle school.
Practice starts after school is dismissed and ends at 5:45 p.m.

BFMS’s football teams play first scrimmages today
LYNCHBURG — Benjamin Franklin Middle School’s A and B football teams play their first preseason games today in Lynchburg against Linkhorne Middle School.
Kickoff is 3 p.m.
BFMS’s A team, led by head coach Chris Renick, finished 10-0 last season and won the Junior Piedmont District champions.
The Eagles have moved to the Roanoke Valley Middle School League and they open their season against league rival William Byrd Middle School in Vinton on Thursday, August 22.
Other league opponents are Andrew Lewis Middle School, Northside Middle School, Read Mountain Middle School, Cave Spring Middle School and Hidden Valley Middle School.
BFMS’s lone home scrimmage is Thursday, August 15 against Staunton River Middle School. Kickoff is 5 p.m.
BFMS takes a 16-game winning streak into its season opener against William Byrd.
Pro wrestling returns to YMCA
Pure Pro Wrestling returns to the Franklin County Family YMCA Saturday, August 10.
Bell time is 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $12. Youth ages 6 and younger are admitted free.

Hunter education course is scheduled for August 26-27
A Virginia Department Game and Inland Fisheries hunter education course is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday August 26 and 27 at The Franklin Center.
Sessions are from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Passage of the course is required to obtain a hunting license in Virginia.
Students must attend both nights of the course.
Books and materials are available at The Franklin Center and must be obtained in advance.
