Professional bowlers return for three days of competition

Lee Brosius releases his ball during last year’s finals. He returns to Rocky Mount this weekend to compete in the PBA50 Plygem Rocky Mount South Region Open.

Professional bowling returns to the local area for the third year this weekend with the staging of the PBA50 Plygem Windows Rocky Mount South Open.

Rocky Mount Bowling Center on North Main Street is hosting the tournament.

The series has staged tournaments in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. Following its stop in Rocky Mount, the series visits Florida for three events, then returns to South Carolina.

As of Wednesday afternoon, 31 bowlers have made commitments to compete this weekend. Those competitors hail from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Ohio, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee.

Lee Brosius, who won last year’s event, is returning and there are bowlers Fieldale, Martinsville, Chatham, Danville, Salem and Pulaski who have committed.

Brosius is competing in the event for the third year. In 2017, he lost to Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the finals. Last year, he bested Darryl Bower, 633-589, to capture the championship.

Brosius bowled games of 227, 201 and 205 in the finals as opposed to Bower’s 181-222-186 series.

Practice sessions are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. today with a pro-am to follow from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Action starts Saturday at 10 a.m. and Sunday at 9 a.m.
