FERRUM — Ferrum College women’s wrestling team opened its 2019-2020 season Friday at William P. Swartz Gymnasium with a pair of setbacks: 28-21 to Gannon University and 29-15 to Presbyterian College.

Also, Gannon defeated Presbyterian, 40-8.

Breonnah Neal made her debut as Ferrum’s head coach.

Alisha Elizalde (101 pounds), Destiny Benjamin (130), Bailey Gilmore (143) and Andrea Langley each was victorious by pin in the loss to Gannon.

Benjamin was a technical fall winner by an 11-0 score in the setback to Presbyterian.

“It was an exciting time for our team — a first dual together and our seven seniors last first dual,’’ Neal said.

“As individuals, they performed very well, and as a team, we were in both duals. Our freshmen really showed up with all three getting a win,’’ Neal said.

“I’m very proud of their effort and will to compete. I’m excited to watch them all grow and see how the team looks with a full line-up,’’ Neal said.

Ferrum returns to action Saturday, Oct. 26 in the King (Tennessee) University Duals in Bristol, Tenn.
