FERRUM — Ferrum College’s field hockey team suffered back-to-back, non-conference, shut-out setbacks to Wesley (Delaware) College and Goucher (Maryland) College Saturday and Sunday at W.B. Adams Stadium.
The Panthers (0-3) were blanked by Wesley, 7-0, and by Goucher, 8-0.
In the loss to Wesley (2-0), Ferrum was limited to one shot; the attempt was on goal by Victoria Tyler.
Wesley netted one goal in the first quarter, two in the second stanza, two in the third period and two in the fourth frame.
The Wolverines finished the match with 30 shots, 16 of which were on goal.
Five players accounted for Wesley’s seven goals.
Kaila Hindt and Madison Cook each scored twice.
Hindt assisted on two other goals, and Cook netted her tallies on a team-high nine shots.
Ferrum goalkeeper Mia Holmes finished the match with nine saves.
Goucher outshot Ferrum, 33-1, and edges of 24-0 in shots on goal and 13-1 in penalty corners.
Goucher netted two goals in each quarter.
Mia Wiggs, Ari Hooper and Danielle Johnson each scored twice for the Gophers, and Wiggins distributed two assists.
Sierra Hines took the Panthers’ lone shot.
Holmes registered 16 saves.
Ferrum has lost eight straight matches dating to last season.
The weekend matches end a season-opening, three-match home stand by the Panthers, who are not slated to play again at Adams Stadium until Sunday, September 22 against Hood (Maryland) College.
The Panthers return to action this weekend with consecutive road matches.
Saturday, Ferrum faces Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and Sunday, Ferrum takes on St. Mary’s College’s in St. Mary’s City, Maryland.
Both matches are scheduled for 1 p.m. starts.
