Franklin County’s junior varsity football team opens preseason play today against Bassett.

The Eagles and the Bengals were foes in the Piedmont District for the past six years, but with the Eagles move to the Blue Ridge District, the two teams are back to being non-league rivals.

FCHS is coming off a 7-2 season in which the Eagles were 4-0 in the Piedmont District.

The Eagles have won seven games each of the past three years.

A year ago, FCHS surpassed the 30-point mark five times and the 40-point mark three times.

The Eagles defeated Piedmont opponents Halifax County, Tunstall, Magna Vista and Bassett and on-district foes Liberty-Bedford, E.C. Glass and Hidden Valley.

FCHS’s two losses, one to Salem, the other to Lord Botetourt, were by 14 points.

FCHS was 4-1 in home games; one of those encounters was played at W.B. Adams Stadium at Ferrum College; and 3-1 in games played on the road.

FCHS’s first Blue Ridge District game is October 10 against Staunton River. Kickoff at Dillon Stadium is 6 p.m.

BFMS scrimmages Staunton River Thursday at home

Benjamin Franklin Middle School’s football teams play their final scrimmages Thursday at home against Staunton River Middle School.

Kickoff is 5 p.m.

BFMS’s B-team opens its 2019 season Monday, August 19 at home against William Byrd Middle School.

Kickoff is 5 p.m.

BFMS’s A-team, which finished undefeated last year and brings a 16-game winning streak into this year’s campaign, opens its season Thursday, August 22 at William Byrd Middle School.

The Roanoke Valley Middle School League game kicks off at 5 p.m. in Vinton.

Cross country practice starts today at middle school

Practice for Benjamin Franklin Middle School’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams begins Wednesday, August 14 at the middle school.

Practice starts after school is dismissed and ends at 5:45 p.m.

The first 2019 practice for Benjamin Franklin Middle School’s co-ed tennis team is Monday, August 19.

Hunter education course is scheduled for August 26-27

A Virginia Department Game and Inland Fisheries hunter education course is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday August 26 and 27 at The Franklin Center.

Sessions are from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Passage of the course is required to obtain a hunting license in Virginia.

Students must attend both nights of the course.

Books and materials are available at The Franklin Center and must be obtained in advance.

Date for Eagle Strut 5K is set

The Eagle Strut 5K race returns for its eighth year Saturday, September 14.

Proceeds benefit Franklin County High School’s senior class – they will be used to offset activity cost and provide aid to those class members who are most in need.

The race takes runners around the town of Rocky Mount.

The 3.1-mile course serves as a perfect introduction to running for novice participants and is enough of a challenge to keep advanced runners interested.

The race takes the starter’s gun at 8 a.m. from the steps of the Roy M. Law Building facing C.I. (Cy) Dillon Stadium-Fred M. Brown Memorial Field.

From there, runners take a right on Tanyard Road, a left on Pell Avenue, a right on North Main Street, a right on Greer Lane, a left on North Main Street, a left on Tanyard Road and finish at FCHS.

Clayton Stanford and Taylor Jones are the reigning men’s and women’s champions.

From 2014-2017, runners had the option to enter and compete in a 10K (6.2 miles) race.

Past champions are Mark Joyce and Emily Burgess (5K) and Dustin Spivey and Amanda Rucker (10K) in 2014; Quint Seagle and Julia Garcia (5K) and Luke Erikson and Martina Stevens (10K) in 2015; David Carter and Frances Lash (5K) and Rob Prom and Molly Philpott (10K) in 2016; and Spivey and Pam Rickard (5K) and Prom and Mary Ellen Philpott (10K) in 2017.
