SONTAG — Franklin County’s girls varsity tennis team opens play in the Piedmont District tournament today at home in the quarterfinals.
FCHS, seeded No. 2, plays its match at the Franklin County Recreation Park in Sontag against No. 7 seed George Washington-Danville at 4:30 p.m.
Tournament play continues Friday with the semifinals and concludes Monday with the championship match.
Halifax County is the No. 1 seed, Bassett is the No. 3 seed, Patrick County is the No. 4, Magna Vista is the No. 5 seed and Martinsville is the No. 6 seed.
FCHS's boys team is the No. 2 seed and has earned a quaterfinal-round bye. The Eagles face the winner of today's match between No. 3 seed Bassett and No. 6 seed Martinsville Friday in the semifinals at Ferrum College.
The championship match is Monday at a site to be determined by seeding.
Halifax is the No. 1 seed, while Patrick County is the No. 4 seed and GW-Danville in the No. 5 seed.
Franklin County girls top two league foes
Franklin County’s girls tennis team completed regular-season play with a pair of 9-0 shutouts at the expense of Piedmont District rivals Magna Vista and Patrick County.
Eight-game pro sets were played in both matches.
Winning in singles for the Eagles (8-2 in the Piedmont District, 11-4 overall) in the match against Magna Vista were Bethany Graham (8-0), McKinleigh Williams (8-0), Jaedyn Jamison (8-1), Jocelyn Routt (8-3), Peyton Jones (by forfeit) and Rachel Pasley (8-1).
Winning in doubles were the teams of Graham and Jones (8-1), Williams and Katie Rutrough (9-8, 10-8 in the tiebreaker) and Pasley and Jones (by forfeit).
Winning in singles for the Eagles in Monday’s match against Patrick County at the recreation park were Graham (8-0), Williams (8-0), Jamison (8-), Routt (8-1), Jones (8-1) and Rutrough (8-2).
Winning in doubles were the teams of Graham and Williams (8-1), Jamison and Routt (8-2) and Jones and Pasley (8-1).
The Eagles’ victory is their second this season over Patrick County, both by shutout, and their fifth in a row.

STUART — Franklin County’s boys varsity tennis team completed regular-season play Monday with a 7-2 Piedmont District triumph over Patrick County.
The Eagles’ victory is its second this season over the Cougars and their fifth in a row.
FCHS takes an 8-4 record (6-2 in the Piedmont District) into postseason district tournament play.
