CHESTERFIELD -- Senior Brice Arrington carded a team-best 76 Monday in leading Franklin County's golf team to a fifth-place finish in the 14-team Lake Chesdin High School Invitational.

The Eagles, playing in their second match of the 2014 campaign, posted a 330 team score.

Arrington was one of five golfers who finished in a deadlock for third place.

Also posting counting scores for FCHS were Trent Cooper (83), Jay Mohler (85) and Tyler Peterson (86).

Scores turned in by John Hatcher Ferguson (86) and Callie Montgomery (91) did not factor into the Eagles' total.

Rob Witherspoon of Cosby bested Davis Topping of Matoaca in a sudden-death playoff to earn medalist accolades.

Both golfers completed regulation play with 75s.

Only 11 golfers broke 80.

Topping and teammate Peyton Broach, who fired a 76, led Matoaca to the team championship with a 306.

James River-Midlothian (315) was second followed by Atlee (317), Cosby (323) and FCHS.

Placing sixth through 14th were Patrick Henry-Roanoke (337), tournament host Manchester (343), Monacan (343), Midlothian (363), Maggie Walker (366), Clover Hill (372), Douglas Freeman (378), Thomas Dale (388) and Prince George (397).

Turning in counting scores for Patrick Henry were Rob Brailsford (79), Vince Wheeler (80), Jake Schneider (85) and Bryce Tackett (93).

Non-counting scores were carded by Tucker Gross (98) and Mike Weaver (101).

James River-Midlothian, Cosby, Patrick Henry and Thomas Dale are Group 6A South Region Conference 3 rivals of FCHS.

FCHS is the reigning Conference 3 champion, while Cosby is a season-removed from conference and regional runner-up showings and an appearance in the state tournament.

This year's Conference 3 tournament will be played at Lake Chesdin Golf Club.

Monday marked the first time that FCHS has competed at the Richmond-area course since 2004 when the Eagles finished third in the Group AAA state tournament.

The Eagles return to action today and Thursday in the annual Bob McLelland Metro Invitational.

First-round play begins today at 11 a.m. at Ole Monterey Golf Club in Roanoke. Thursday's final round tees off at 1 p.m. at Blue Hills Golf Club in Roanoke.
