SALEM — Glenvar built a 2-0 lead in sets Monday night, then prevented a Franklin County comeback with a match-deciding fourth-set triumph in a 3-1 non-district volleyball win over the Eagles.

Set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 25-20.

The tandem of Sara McIlwain and Claire Griffith led the Highlanders (3-9) to the victory.

Mcllwain, a junior, netted 11 kills and seven blocks and Griffith, a freshman, tallied 18 kills and five blocks.

Sophomore hitter Courtney Bryant led the Eagles (10-8) with 21 kills and 28 digs.

Also, senior hitter Alexandra Christoff totaled 11 kills and 15 digs and senior setter Rachel Justice distributed 34 assists.

FCHS returns to action Thursday against Blue Ridge District rival and two-time reigning Class 3 state champion Lord Botetourt. Match time is 7 p.m. at Samuel M. Hawkins-Central Gymnasium.

The Cavaliers shut out the Eagles 3-0 earlier this season.

The contest is the Eagles’ final regular-season home match.

Franklin County sweeps Staunton River on Senior Night

Alexandra Christoff and Rachel Justice turned in stellar performances Thursday on Senior Night for Franklin County as the Eaqles swept Staunton River, 3-0, in a Blue Ridge District volleyball match at Samuel M. Hawkins-Central Gymnasium.

Set scores were 25-12, 25-20, 25-9.

FCHS (5-1 in the Blue Ridge District) defeated Staunton River for the second time this season.

Seniors Christoff, Justice and Reece Turner were honored in a pre-match ceremony.

Christoff finished the match with seven kills and 15 digs, while Justice tallied five kills, served three aces and passed out 26 assists.

Sophomore Courtney Bryant finished the match with 16 kills and three blocks.

Jayvees fall to Glenvar, 2-1, on the road

SALEM — Glenvar edged Franklin County 2-1 in a non-district junior varsity volleyball match Monday night.

Set scores were 25-3, 17-25, 15-13.

FCHS (11-7-2) is 2-3 in three-set matches this season with wins over Magna Vista and Staunton River and losses to Bassett, William Byrd and Glenvar.

The Eagles play their final home match of the season Thursday against Blue Ridge District rival Lord Botetourt.

Match time at Samuel M. Hawkins-Central Gymnasium is 5:30 p.m.

The Cavaliers swept the Eagles, 2-0, in a league match played earlier this season.

Jayvees sweep Staunton River, 2-0

Franklin County’s junior varsity volleyball team swept Staunton River, 2-0, in a Blue Ridge District match played Thursday at Samuel M. Hawkins-Central Gymnasium.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-20.

FCHS’s victory is its second this season over Staunton River.

The Eagles, coached by Brittany Flora and Jordan Templin, are 4-2 in the Blue Ridge District.
