When the fall sports campaign begins at Franklin County, not only will the Eagles be making their debut in a new district, but they’ll be in a new region as well.

Former Conference 3 and Class 6 Region B rivals Cosby, James River-Midlothian and Thomas Dale are making the move to Class 6 Region A along with FCHS.

The quartet is joining a region that includes seven Virginia Beach area schools: Floyd E. Kellam, Landstown, Ocean Lakes, Tallwood, Grassfield, Oscar Smith and Western Branch.

Region A is comprised of five districts: Beach (Kellam, Landstown, Ocean Lakes and Tallwood), Blue Ridge (Franklin County), Central (Thomas Dale), Dominion (Cosby, James River-Midlothian) and Southeastern (Grassfield, Oscar Smith, Western Branch).

In football, eight of the 11 teams qualify for postseason play based on the Virginia High School League’s (VHSL) power rankings.

Varsity football schedule finalized

Franklin County’s varsity football schedule has been finalized for 2019 and 2020.

The Eagles open with consecutive road games against Liberty-Bedford (August 30) and Salem (September 6) before hosting E.C. Glass (September 13) for their home opener.

The first full month of the season ends with a visit to Magna Vista (September 20) and a home game against Hidden Valley (September 27).

FCHS’s non-district slate includes games against opponents from the Seminole District (Liberty-Bedford, E.C. Glass); the River Ridge District (Salem, Hidden Valley) and the Piedmont (Magna Vista).

Following its open date (October 4), FCHS makes its Blue Ridge District debut at Staunton River on October 11.

Back-to-back home games against Northside (October 18) and Lord

Botetourt (October 25), followed by a visit to William Fleming (November 1) and a home game against William Byrd (November 8) in FCHS’s regular-season finale.

In terms of classification, FCHS plays one Class 5 team (William Fleming), two Class 4 teams (Salem, E.C. Glass) and seven Class 3 teams (Liberty-Bedford, Magna Vista, Staunton River, Northside, Lord Botetourt and William Byrd).
