PLEASANT GARDEN, N.C. — Ferrum College’s men’s cross country team captured first-place varsity team accolades in the 2019 Hagan Stone Classic Saturday at Hagan Stone Park.
The Panthers scored 55 points to defeat Randolph College (71) for the championship.
Tysen Gotschi was Ferrum’s top performer. He completed an eight-kilometer trek in 28:11.6, while Domonique Veney was next in 28:29.8.
Gotschi and Veney are freshmen.
According to program records, the team championship is Ferrum’s seventh, its first since its 2008 win in the Salem Invitational.
Ferrum’s women’s team placed third among four varsity teams that competed with 107 points.
Randolph (52) was first followed by Sweet Briar College (74), Ferrum and Averett University (108).
Genesie Piniero was the Panthers top performer in the five-kilometer race in 22:41.
Erin Reynolds was Ferrum’s second finisher in 22:48.5.
“I was very happy overall with how both of our teams ran. We had a hard week of practice and it was very hot pretty much every day,’’ Panthers head coach Mark White said.
“We responded well and ran some good races. We have to keep taking the good things and the bad from each race and learn from it. That makes us better for the next time. We are doing that,’’ White said.
Ferrum’s men’s and women’s team compete in thw Gettysburg (Penn.) Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 19.
