FERRUM – Bridgewater College used multiple run-scoring rallies in each game Saturday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball sweep of Ferrum College, 5-1 and 9-0, at American National Bank Field.
In the first game, the Eagles (7-7 in the ODAC, 19-11 overall) broke a scoreless stalemate by manufacturing four runs in the top of the fifth frame and one run in the top of the seventh.
The Panthers (6-8 in the ODAC) generated their lone run in the bottom of the sixth.
Each team collected eight hits, and Ferrum committed the game’s lone error.
Bridgewater belted five home runs in the doubleheader with four of those coming in the second game – a contest that was stopped after five innings because of the run rule.
In the first game, Katrina Martin’s three-run home run was the highlight of Bridgewater’s four-run fifth.
Allison McGehee broke up the shutout when she belted a solo home run to left centerfield in the sixth.
Martin was 4 of 4 with two doubles and a home run. She drove in four runs.
Also, Kaitlyn Tirona hit a double.
McGehee was 3 of 3 with a home run and an RBI.
Carolyn Campbell (7-5) tossed a complete-game, eight-hitter inside the pitching circle. She permitted one walk and an earned run, while striking out one.
Ferrum righthander Ashton Lambeth worked sevenn complete frames. She yielded eight hits, two walks and one earned run. She struck out four.
In the second game, Bridgewater registered seven hits and limited Ferrum to two, both singles. Each team committed one error.
The Eagles manufactured four runs each in the second and fifth innings and one run in the third.
Tirona, Martin, Stephanie Carroll and Brooke Louden each smacked a home run and Sydney Layman hit a double.
Louden (8-2) threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout. She walked one and struck out one.
Ferrum starter Jasmine Agree lasted four innings. She surrendered six hits, five walks and seven earned runs.
