Free tax preparation assistance is available to anyone who makes $55,000 or less through STEP’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), an IRS sponsored program, at its Rocky Mount office and Ferrum College beginning the end of January.

Students in the college’s accounting program have received training and will get hands-on experience working with federal and state tax returns.

Sessions will be held Mondays from 4-6 p.m. at STEP in Rocky Mount, Feb. 4-April 15; Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Ferrum College, Jan. 30-April 10; and Thursdays from 4-6 p.m. at Ferrum College, Jan. 31-April 11. To schedule an appointment, call STEP at 540-483-5142.

Taxpayers need to bring the appropriate paperwork including: a photo identification, social security cards for all tax payers and dependents, and all tax related documents such as W-2. Bringing a copy of last year’s tax return is also recommended.
