Virginia State Police are investigating two crashes on Aug. 13 that resulted in fatalities, according to a news release from Sgt. Rick Garletts.

The first crash occurred at 1:03 p.m. on Aug. 13 when a 2005 Ford Taurus turning left from U.S. 220 onto Starlight Lane near Boones Mill failed to yield the right of way and was struck by a 2014 Buick Regal traveling north on U.S. 220, Garletts said.

The passenger of the Ford, Jean Young Mattox, 86, of Rocky Mount died at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Garletts said. She and the Ford’s driver, Irene Young Shively, also of Rocky Mount, were both wearing seat belts.

The driver of the Buick, Oliver L. Steiner, 69, of Rocky Mount, also was wearing his seat belt. He was transported to the hospital with injuries, Garletts said.

The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team was called to help with the crash, which is under investigation.

The second crash that resulted in a fatality occurred at the intersection of Va. 122 and Hardy Road around 7:40 p.m., Garletts said. According to an Aug. 14 press release, 2001 Nissan Sentra was traveling east on Hardy Road, failed to to yield the right of way at the intersection and was struck by a 1996 Jeep Cherokee. The driver of the Nissan, 24-year-old Madison Keaton was wearing her seatbelt but died at the scene. The driver of the Jeep was not identified by officials but according to Garletts was injured and taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The crash remains under investigation.
