Pastors Clayton and Sarah Payne will begin their appointment at Redwood United Methodist Church on June 30.
The couple previously served in Staunton area churches and have been involved in pastoral ministry for the last 10 years. The Paynes will assume the post following the departure of Brad Dulaney, Redwood’s pastor for the past 10 years.
Clayton’s emphasis will be in worship and connectional leadership, while Sarah will serve the church in transformational and community outreach.
The Paynes said they are excited about getting to know the church and the community of Redwood.
“We are very excited in getting to know everyone and hearing what they love about Redwood,” Sarah said. “I definitely see a purpose in God bringing us to Redwood. Both Clayton and I have different, yet complementary, gifts; it’s a nice balance and we hope to build upon what is already an energized and vital church that is dedicated toward connecting the unconnected.”
The Paynes will help fulfill Redwood’s current goals of completing the first phase of the Redwood Outreach Center, supporting the church’s structural leadership and embracing diversity.
Completing the ROC will enable the church to reach more people in mission and serve as a connection to the community. The couple said they sense that the church is well-positioned to reach residents in Rocky Mount as well as new lake residents. The Paynes are enthusiastic about participating in the church’s ministries and community outreach, and have already met a few church members.
The couple, who has been married 12 years, has a son, Cody. Clayton is a native of Las Vegas while Sarah is from Bristol, Tenn. Both attended seminary at Eastern Mennonite University. Clayton is pursuing his doctorate at United Theological in Dayton, Ohio.
Redwood Church is located at 3001 Old Franklin Turnpike two miles east of Rocky Mount. For more information about the church email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 489-9090.
