Read to Pets

Sam Pendleton and Gretchen Orr read to one of the many adoptable cats at the Franklin County Humane Society Planned Pethood Clinic and Adoption Center in Rocky Mount on July 4.

While many children spent their Fourth of July in a pool, at a lake, a beach or playing outside with friends, around 40 local children spent their holiday reading to cats and dogs at the Franklin County Humane Society Planned Pethood Clinic and Adoption Center. The new program at the humane society aims to help new readers gain confidence in their reading because animals don’t judge how well a person reads. Reading to Pets also helps socialize the animals and gets them to be more comfortable around people, especially children.
