More than a dozen competitors turned out for the seventh annual Smith Mountain Lake Stand Up Paddleboard Race on Sept. 21 at Smith Mountain Lake Community Park in Scruggs.

Competitors could race along a 2- or 4-mile route. New this year were a 6-mile surfski category and a 2-mile kayak category.

In the 2-mile race, Thomas Suydam finished first with a time of 24:10. He also won the 17 and under male division. Allison Angell was close behind with a time of 24:12, placing first in the 18- to 49-year-old female division.

Ryan Kay placed first in the 18- to 49-year-old male division with a time of 27:28. Neal Jessup placed first in the 50-plus male division with a time of 25:04, and Laura Kelly place first in the 50-plus female division with a time of 36:00.

In the 4-mile race, Rob Suydam placed first with a time of 39:53. He also won the 50-plus male division.

Brian Hartman placed first in the 18- to 49-year-old male division with a time of 42:45. Jennifer Deforest placed first in the 18- to 49-year-old female division with a time of 54:32. Mary Cockerel placed first in the age 50-plus female division with a time of 51:42.

In the surfski 6-mile race, Scott Thomas placed first with a time of 47:42.

An awards ceremony was held after the race at Mexico Viejo’s Crazy Horse location.

The event was sponsored by Franklin County Parks and Recreation, Mountain 2 Island Paddleboard Company, Roanoke Outside and Webster Marine.
