Virginia State Police are investigating a motorcycle crash that killed a Penhook man.

The crash occurred Aug. 20 at 8:43 a.m. on Virginia 40, two-tenths of a mile south of Virginia 876 in Pittsylvania County, according to Sgt. Rick Garletts.

Keith Randolph Craighead, 57, was driving a 2003 Kawasaki VN1500 that was traveling west on Virginia 40, when the motorcycle ran into the back of a tractor trailer that was stopped in the roadway for a construction zone, Garletts said. The construction zone was clearly marked and had flaggers in place for the lane closure, he added.

Craighead was wearing his helmet and was transported by helicopter to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he later died, Garletts said.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured, and the crash remains under investigation.
