Shoppers in Rocky Mount may have noticed the giant yellow “Store Closing” sign on the Peebles storefront, but don’t panic yet shoppers, the store may be closing but it is coming back — as Gordmans.
Michelle Wells, assistant manager at the Rocky Mount Peebles, said the store is slated to remain open until February when it will close for two weeks. The store is scheduled to reopen March 1 as Gordmans department store, which Wells said is comparable to TJ Maxx or Marshall’s. She added the store will continue to receive trucks of new merchandise until the store closes next year.
Meanwhile, sales between 10% and 40% off are being held as part of the store closing. Wells said credit cards will remain the same, though customers can expect to receive a new card with the new company name on them.
Peebles and Gordmans are both owned by Stage Stores. According to Stage’s website, the brand-name retail store company acquired Peebles, Inc. in 2003. In 2018, Stage began testing the conversion of department stores to Gordmans off-price stores. Earlier this year, Stage announced plans to convert department stores to Gordmans. The retail corporation also acquired Goody’s through the Goody’s bankruptcy auction.
