Jon Atchue recently announced he will run as an independent for the Gills Creek seat on the Franklin County School Board. The election is November 5. Incumbent Karen Hiltz will not seek re-election.
Atchue shared that he wants to help “make our good schools … better.” He continued that he has no set agenda, but believes in continuous improvement though focusing on specific goals.
“Our public schools are a great indicator about the health and vibrancy of our community. Great public schools attract families, improve our local talent pool, and signal to business that Franklin County can meet their demands for talented and skilled workers,” Atchue wrote.
“And, attracting business will provide more opportunities for our graduates, and give them more reasons to stay within Franklin County.”
Recently retired, Atchue moved in 2016 to Smith Mountain Lake from La Grange, Ill. For 30 years, he focused on helping organizations meet the changing demands of the marketplace and on workforce development. He served as chief human resources officer at Rexam and chief learning officer at RR Donnelley.
Atchue has served on the board of directors for Lake Christian Ministries since 2018.
