The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call in reference to shots fired in the 8000 block of Franklin Street in Ferrum at 11 p.m. Saturday.
According to Sept. 11 news release from Capt. Phillip Young, Charlie Hairston, 34, of Fieldale, and Ricky Dawson, 31, of Ferrum were involved in an altercation. Both men were armed with handguns at the time of the incident.
Hairston and Dawson fired shots at each other, and Dawson was struck multiple times, Young said.
While deputies were on scene investigating, the communications center received a call from Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital in reference to a man with a gunshot wound, later determined to be Dawson. Young said Dawson was still hospitalized and in stable condition.
Hairston was charged with possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, Young said.
“It is early in the investigation, but additional charges may be pending,” Young added.
