A body discovered on the side of Va. 116 in the 7900 block of Jubal Early Highway in Windy Gap has been identified as 30-year-old Travis Wayne Pannell.

Pannell was reported missing in Roanoke on Oct. 8 after having last been seen there on Oct. 4.

According to an Oct. 28 news release from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, the medical examiner’s office has determined the cause of death to be homicide and the manner of death to be gunshot wounds.

Capt. Phillip Young said based on the preliminary investigation, the sheriff’s office does not believe that the residents in and around where the body was found are in any danger.

“This is an ongoing investigation and additional information will be provided as it becomes available,” he said.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Sgt. J.P. Nolen at the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office at 483-6662.
