A 20-foot runabout ran aground near channel marker R36 on Aug. 3

The boat operator jumped the riprap on shore and was on land when the boat stopped, according to Todd Ohlerich with the Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire Department. The department received a call about the incident just after 9:30 p.m.

“It looked like the operator got disoriented at night,” Ohlerich said.

In addition to the operator, there were several passengers on the the boat, but Ohlerich said no one was injured and alcohol was found to not be a factor in the crash.

On Aug. 4, a 14-year-old was injured while wakeboarding near channel marker R54 around 4:30 p.m., Ohlerich said. The teenager injured his lower back and was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

A 17-year-old also was injured July 30 while tubing near channel marker C4. According to James Hale of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the teen was injured when she fell off a tube while being towed. She was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Also on July 30, officers arrested a Hardy man who is suspected of leaving the scene after the boat he was operating collided with a dock near channel marker R30 around 10:30 p.m.

Hale said a fisherman in the area noticed a boat leaving from the direction of the incident and reported it to conservation officers. Anthony Muccino, 33, was found later and charged with operating a vessel under the influence and leaving the scene after a collision.
