A Ferrum man faces up to 20 years in prison for illegally distributing anabolic steroids on two occasions.
Joseph Jason Denoto, 35, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Franklin County Circuit Court to distribution of Testosterone Cypionate on Oct. 10, 2013, and Nandrolone Decanoate on Oct. 17, 2013.
A third charge of possession of anabolic steroids was dismissed through a plea agreement.
Franklin County Commonwealth's Attorney Tim Allen said the drug purchases were arranged by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
The controlled buys were made from Denoto in a service station parking lot in Rocky Mount. On each occasion, Denoto was paid $150 for plastic containers, which contained glass vials of the drugs in liquid form.
Denoto told investigators that he ordered the steroids from a magazine, Allen said.
A sentencing hearing for Denoto is set for Nov. 17 at 3:30 p.m. in circuit court.
Anabolic steroids are often used by bodybuilders and athletes to improve performance. Using them this way is not legal or safe.
Abuse of anabolic steroids has been linked to health problems, such as acne, voice deepening and growth of facial hair in women, high blood pressure, heart problem and heart attacks, liver disease, kidney damage and aggressive behavior.
Doctors use anabolic steroids to treat some hormone problems in men, delayed puberty and muscle loss from diseases.
