A Glade Hill man died Wednesday afternoon at a Roanoke hospital following a car crash on U.S. 220 in front of Plateau Plaza.
Foster Matherly, 78, was driving a 1994 Mercury Cougar when it struck the back of a 1994 Nissan Sentra that was stopped at the traffic light in the southbound lanes of 220, according to Trooper C.N. Lynch with the Virginia State Police.
The driver of the Nissan, Laurie Miller, 53, of Rocky Mount, and an 8-year-old passenger were transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released, Lynch said. Both of them were wearing seat belts.
Matherly was also transported to Roanoke Memorial, where he died a few hours later. He was not wearing a seat belt, Lynch said.
The crash occurred about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday on Virgil H. Goode Highway at its intersection with Wirtz Road (Route 697).
