Callaway Fire and Rescue will host a fundraiser on June 7 in honor of the late Capt. Jerry Custer.
Wednesday, June 4, 2014
Callaway Fire and Rescue is sponsoring "Custer's Cruise-In" on Saturday, June 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the fire and rescue building in memory of Jerry Custer.
All proceeds will be donated to The Lustgarden Foundation to be used for pancreatic cancer research. There will be food for sale, door prizes and music.
Capt. Jerry Custer began his volunteerism at age 18 when he became a firefighter for the Callaway Volunteer Fire Department. He served for 19 years on the fire department and then helped others charter the Callaway Volunteer Rescue Squad in May 1991.
At that time, he served on both fire and rescue departments. Custer served as sergeant, then 1st lieutenant before rising to the rank of captain in 1996. He served as captain until his death in January 2014, with a combined service on fire and rescue of 41 years.
Even after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2008, Custer continued to dedicate his time and efforts as captain and tried to run as many emergency calls as his strength and stamina allowed.
Custer took his volunteer service very seriously and was always taking continuing education classes to refresh his knowledge and skills so he could serve the Callaway community as best he could, according to Arlet Greer. He had a deep love of family and loved their annual camping trips. His faith in God was strong and he enjoyed living and being a part of his community, as well as a love for old model vehicles, she added.
