The deadline for enrolling in Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital's (CFMH) Health Explore Camp is Friday, June 6.
The camp for rising sixth and seventh graders will be held from Tuesday, June 17 through Thursday, June 19.
Co-sponsored by the Virginia Hospital Association, the camp is aimed to educate local youth about health care careers available in the community by providing discussion and hands-on activities led by nurses, physicians and interdisciplinary staff members.
"Multiple departments will talk about their professions and what their department does," said Lisa Dillon, senior director of nursing at CFMH. "Multiple hospitals throughout the state host similar camps, and we're starting kind of small."
CFMH's camp is limited to 10 students to allow maximum hands-on experience.
"Thus far, CFMH hasn't had many students sign up and is looking to get the word out," said Allison Buth, media and public relations advisor at Carilion.
Students will be taught first aid and given a kit to take home with a DVD they may use to help educate their family members. They will also gain experience in CPR and learn about the effects of alcohol.
The camp costs $30 per student, but scholarships are available and determined on an individual basis. CFMH will provide light breakfast, lunch and snacks to participating students.
