Carla Barrell, a science teacher at Franklin County High School, has been named Franklin County's Teacher of the Year for the 2014-15 school year.
The announcement was made Thursday evening at the 25th annual Celebration of Franklin County Public Schools Educators, as dozens of teachers and staff gathered to honor, recognize and award years of service.
Daphne Tilley, last year's teacher of the year, assisted Assistant Superintendent Sue Rogers with the presentation of awards.
Franklin County School Board chairperson Sarah Alexander spoke to the crowd of educators in attendance.
"You provide inspiration to hundreds of students and you are the experts on inspiration," said Alexander. "Through your commitment, your dedication, your courage, your patience and your humor, you provide what our children need and you make a difference."
Barrell, who is one of three Teachers of the Year for Franklin County High School, thanked her co-workers for the honor.
"I wish every teacher could have the experience of working with such a wonderful team, wonderful administration and such a wonderful system" said Barrell.
Barrell spoke about her love for the world around her and her wish that all her students could appreciate that as well.
"I enjoy Mother Earth and everything she's provided for me, therefore, I want everyone else to appreciate that, too," she said. "I always felt I'm doing what I'm supposed to do. Everything we do has an impact."
Barrell received $1,200, which was a collection of donations from area businesses. She also received a trophy, bouquet of flowers and other gifts.
Awards for Outstanding Paraprofessionals were presented to Hannah C. Denton of Callaway Elementary, Tammy M. Hall of Lee M. Waid Elementary and André L. Taylor of BFMS.
Special awards were presented for years of outstanding service. Certificates were presented to teachers for 10, 20 and 25 years of service to the school division.
There were also many retirees honored with plaques.

A highlight of the event was the performance by The BFMS Steel Band, under the direction of Richard Rudolph. The band received a standing ovation from the crowd.
Superintendent Mark Church closed the ceremony with congratulations and praise for Barrell and all the teachers for their dedicated service.
"I'm excited that Carla was selected," said Church. "I had the opportunity to work with her and her team at the high school and they are a great group. I'm privileged to work with such outstanding educators across this division. I'm always in awe of what you do."
