No charges have been filed in connection with the accidental shooting death Monday of a 7-year-old boy by his 12-year-old brother, according to authorities.
Lt. Philip Young with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office said the ongoing investigation is still at the stage of taking statements from persons after the shooting occurred and gathering other information.
Young said the shooting happened at a neighbors's house on Double Oaks Lane in the Burnt Chimney community where the two boys were playing. The 12-year-old found a handgun and accidentally discharged it, killing his brother.
The 7-year-old boy was found lying on the floor of the residence was was pronounced at the scene.
Young said once the investigation is completed, all of the information gathered from the investigation will be reviewed and then turned over to the commonwealth's attorney.
Young again encouraged citizens to make sure all firearms are locked safely away.
"Even if firearms are well-hidden, children are curious and will often stumble upon these items. Please make sure all firearms are placed, unloaded, in a locked room or safe." said Young.
