Last fall, members of the Franklin County High School Self Determination Club started numerous fundraising projects, including a golf tournament at Mariners' Landing, and raised more money than expected for an educational trip.
About 15 club members left Wednesday to visit Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens, using part of the $4,800 raised, before returning to Franklin County the following day.
Teachers Janet Osborne and Kathy Rutrough, assisted by Theresa Gamm, said club members decided to donate $500 ($100 each) to five Franklin County non-profit organizations with part of the surplus money.
Selected for the donations were the Franklin County Free Clinic, Relay for Life, Southwest Virginia Child Advocacy Center, Heavenly Manna and the Franklin County Humane Society.
"These five groups do a lot for Franklin County and the club members wanted to show their appreciation," Osborne said.
