A Wirtz man pleaded guilty Wednesday in Franklin County Circuit Court to assault and battery of a family member.
Andrew Howard Gettier, 37, was also charged with unlawful wounding and child abuse, both felonies, in addition to the assault charge, but the two felony charges were dismissed through a plea agreement.
The assault charge is a misdemeanor and carries a maximum of 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.
Prosecutor Dwight Rudd said the incident occurred in the Gettier home on Sept. 29, 2013, when his two daughters got into an argument. Gettier heard the argument, came into the room where his daughters were and struck his 13-year-old daughter twice, with one of the blows cutting her lip.
The incident was reported by another family member. At first, Gettier denied striking the child, but then later said he was sorry for what he did, Rudd said.
Gettier has limited contact with the child by order of the Franklin County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and is in counseling. Gettier is allowed to see his children on Sunday at church and on Wednesday evenings after church, Rudd said. He is not living in the home.
A sentencing hearing for Gettier is set for May 16 at 9:45 a.m. in circuit court.
