A body believed to be an elderly Floyd County man who has been missing since November was found last week in Franklin County.
The body was found on March 5 near a burgundy Buick that fits the description of the one driven by Robert Schmitt, 92, who was last seen on Nov. 16, 2013, according to the Floyd County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators believe Schmitt drove into a field where the vehicle slid down a steep ravine and struck several trees, police said. The vehicle came to rest near a creek.
The body has been sent to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for positive identification.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office assisted in the search for the missing man.
"This brings a sad ending to a long search for Mr. Schmitt by the Floyd and Franklin county sheriff's offices and by many individuals who spent countless hours searching for him," according to a press release from the Floyd Sheriff's Office.
