A second Henry County man was arrested last week in connection with an officer-involved shooting incident at a residence on Prillaman Switch Road in Ferrum on Jan. 7.
Charles Lawrence Gilmore, 31, of Bassett was arrested following his release from a Roanoke hospital on Jan. 16, according to Lt. R. Taylor with the Virginia State Police.
Gilmore is charged with assaulting a police officer, attempting to assault a police officer, armed robbery and using a firearm in the commission of a felony, Taylor said.
Gilmore is being held in the Western Virginia Regional Jail without bond.
Another Henry County man was arrested at the scene of the incident on Jan. 7.
Christopher Hardin Jr., 34, of Bassett is charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The incident began as an armed robbery and progressed into a shootout between the two suspects and Franklin County deputies and Ferrum College police officers, according to the Virginia State Police (VSP).
Just after 10 p.m., two armed men entered the Ferrum residence and confronted the homeowner, who fired shots at the two men, according to Corinne N. Geller, public relations director for the VSP. The men fired back, but neither the homeowner nor the female resident was injured.
Just before the shots were fired, someone inside the residence called 911 and hung up, Geller said. When deputies responded to the 911 call a few minutes later, the two suspects exited the residence and exchanged gunfire with the deputies and Ferrum officers.
One deputy was injured in the skirmish but was not shot, Taylor said.
One suspect was struck by gunfire, and officers surrounded the area to search for the second suspect, who was not shot. The second suspect was arrested without incident just after midnight.
A handgun was recovered with the second suspect, and officers seized marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside the residence, Geller said.
Hardin is also being held at the Western Virginia Regional Jail without bond.
The VSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation is in charge of the investigation because police officers were involved in the shooting, which is standard procedure.
