Pre-K fair set for Saturday

Monday, January 20, 2014

By STACEY HAIRSTON - Staff Writer

Franklin County public schools (FCPS) and STEP Early Head Start are looking for children who are eligible to join their programs.

The annual Franklin County Pre-K Fair is set for Saturday, Jan. 25 in the Rocky Mount Elementary cafeteria from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Children who will be age 3 or 4 years by Sept. 30 are eligible to join STEP's Head Start program, and children who will be age 4 by Sept. 30 are eligible to join FCPS's pre-K program.

Interested parents are encouraged to attend the fair and complete an application for the 2014-2015 school year.

Parents should bring their child's original birth certificate, social security card, immunization record, proof of income and two proofs of Franklin County residency. Proof of income should be a paycheck stub or income tax return.

The first proof of residency should be a lease agreement or mortgage payment check stub. The second proof of residency should be a utility bill, homeowner's or renter's insurance policy, real estate or personal property tax receipt or a recent payroll stub showing an address.

Applications are available online and can be downloaded and brought to the fair by visiting the public schools' website at www.frco.k12.va.us. Click on the "Parents" tab and look for the "Pre-K Information" link.

STEP also offers services to children with disabilities and day care services for infants, toddlers and children up to 4 years old whose families are eligible for its programs.

FCPS partners with STEP by jointly taking in applications from Franklin County families.

Each elementary school in the county offers a pre-K class. Glade Hill, Lee Waid and Sontag each offer two pre-K classes that are "collaborative," meaning they contain children who are both STEP Early Head Start and FCPS pre-K students.

A snow date for the fair is set for Saturday, Feb. 1.

For more information, call the FCPS pre-K office at 540-483-5759 or the STEP pre-K program at (540) 483-5142, ext. 3013.
