The Franklin County Family YMCA will offer a one-day, free introductory swim lesson on Sunday, Jan. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. at its Rocky Mount facility.
Instructors will be on hand to offer a free introduction to basic swimming skills for ages 3 to 15 years old as a part of the YMCA's commitment to making the best swim programs available to the residents of Franklin County, according to Kevin McAlexander with Y member services.
No early registration will be required but space will be limited and be on a first come, first served basis.
Four stations will be set up with different instructors working on different swimming skills.
"It's a great way for kids who have never been in the water to get comfortable with the experience and begin to develop swimming skills," said Rob Turman, aquatics director at the YMCA. "We are even going to include a swimming assessment so the parents will have an idea what level swim class their child would be right for."
The YMCA has a wide range of swim experiences for people of all ages and skill levels. In December, the Y acquired a 25-foot inflatable slide that requires a swim test to use. The Y will offer a slide swim day on Sunday, Feb. 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is $4 for Y members and $6 for non-members.
Also offered in Rocky Mount are swim lessons, aquatic exercise classes and a competitive swim team.
"Over the years, thousands of children have learned to swim at the Y, and we are proud to be able to continue making events like this available," Turman said. "It's really a part of the important role the Y plays in Franklin County."
