The fundraising goal for the United Way of Franklin County was not met for this year, but the total was better than last year's. That in itself is very good news as agencies relying on UW funding will see an increase in allocations this year.
As we all know, fundraising has been tough in recent years as the economy has struggled and donations have been significantly down. Unfortunately, during times when the economy falters, more and more people need the help offered by the nonprofits that are under the UW's funding umbrella.
In the 2012 fundraising campaign, almost $150,000 was collected to help fund area nonprofits for 2013. In 2013, that number has already jumped to $175,000 and may go higher if the projected funding of about $310,000 is collected. The goal last year was $375,000.
About $250,000 in funding was requested of United Way by partner agencies for 2014, so if more donations do come in, that part of the goal may very well be met.
The United Way is on the right track as the economy improves. The organization is spending more time in the community, trying to help make residents aware of all the great work the UW partner agencies do. It's also important to note that money donated to UW stays in the county.
Another detail to keep in mind is that UW gives money to agencies at intervals throughout the year, and it also raises funds during the course of the year.
About 25,000 residents in need are helped each year with UW funds, and anyone donating can specify which partner agency is to receive the funds. Without the funding, agencies would simply not be able to provide much-needed help.
Please consider giving money to United Way. Donations can be made online at www.fcunitedway.org, through mail (P.O. Box 446, Rocky Mount), in person at 335 S Main Street, or by phoning in a credit card number at 540-483-4949.
Also consider visiting some of the UW partner agencies to see first-hand the good work being done to help our neighbors in need.
