A Boones Mill man faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to sexually abusing a child under the age of 13.
Charles Lambert Gibson, 70, pleaded guilty in Franklin County Circuit Court to one count of forcible aggravated sexual battery of a 4-year-old child, according to prosecutor Dwight Rudd.
Gibson was indicted in October on one count of sodomy and one count of taking indecent liberties with a child, but the sodomy charge was reduced to the lesser felony as part of a plea agreement, Rudd said. The indecent liberties charge was dismissed in exchange for his guilty plea.
The plea agreement was offered to Gibson to prevent the child from having to testify, Rudd said.
The incident occurred at a residence in Boones Mill on April 16, 2013.
Gibson also faces a fine of up to $100,000, Rudd said. His sentencing hearing is set for March 4 at 3 p.m. in circuit court. The court ordered Gibson to undergo a psychosexual evaluation before the hearing.
Gibson was denied bond and is incarcerated in the Western Virginia Regional Jail.
