One man shot, one man arrested in Ferrum shootout

By K.A. WAGONER - Staff Writer

One Henry County man has been arrested and a second has been hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting incident at a residence on Prillaman Switch Road in Ferrum Tuesday night.

The incident began as an armed robbery and progressed into a shootout between the two suspects and Franklin County deputies and Ferrum College police officers, according to the Virginia State Police (VSP).

Christopher Hardin Jr., 34, of Bassett has been charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

A second robbery suspect, who has not been identified, was transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Corinne N. Geller, public relations director for the VSP.

Just after 10 p.m., two armed men entered the Ferrum residence and confronted the homeowner, who fired shots at the two men, Geller said. The men fired back, but neither the homeowner nor the female resident was injured.

Just before the shots were fired, someone inside the residence called 911 and hung up, Geller said. When deputies responded to the 911 call a few minutes later, the two suspects exited the residence and exchanged gunfire with the deputies and Ferrum College officers.

One deputy was injured in the skirmish but was not shot.

One suspect was struck by gunfire, and officers surrounded the area to search for the second suspect, who was not shot. The second suspect was arrested without incident just after midnight.

A handgun was recovered with the second suspect, and officers seized marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside the residence, Geller said.

Hardin is being held at the Western Virginia Regional Jail.

The VSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation is in charge of the investigation because police officers were involved in the shooting.
