A main water line break at the intersection of South Main Street and Scuffling Hill Road closed parts of both roads from Wednesday night until early Thursday morning, according to the Rocky Mount Public Works Department.
Cecil Mason, public works director, said South Main Street was closed north of the intersection and Scuffling Hill Road was closed between South Main Street and Old Fort Road while repairs were made.
The break in the water line was reported about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, and repairs were completed at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday, Mason said.
During the closure, all commercial truck traffic was directed to use Route 220 in order to bypass the affected area.
An earlier report of the incident by the Rocky Mount Police Department said the repairs were expected to cause the detour during the morning and possibly the afternoon hours, which would affect commuter traffic Thursday morning. However, the repairs were made in about five hours and commuter traffic was not affected.
No serious damage was done by the water line break, but some asphalt was broken loose, Mason said.
