Actor and director Derek Young's first feature horror film, "Family Property: Backwoods Killing Spree," has been released on DVD just in time for Halloween.
The movie was filmed in Franklin and Floyd counties and Martinsville. Actors in the movie include Alexander Isaiah Thomas from "Cabin Fever 2," Jeremy Ambler from "The Walking Dead," and Lloyd Kaufman from "Troma Filmsand."
The film is about a dead farmer's son, Derek Jones, who stays hidden to protect their family's property and keep his promise to his father no matter what.
For the first time in 10 years, someone makes the mistake of stepping on the property, which evokes a killing spree.
"...The script and concept are both excellent, and the story is definitely there," said Dave Harlequin with Stiff Magazine. "Family Property's retroactive camerawork is so good, if you're not careful, you'll forget you're watching a new movie."
The film was written, edited and directed by Young, a Franklin County native, who started his acting career with parts in a friend's short film projects.
Young soon found his love for filmmaking and made "Family Property," which was released in March 2009. Now it has been released on DVD by World Wide Multi Media and Chemical Burn Entertainment.
Young has had acting parts in "The Vampires of Zanzibar," which can be viewed in its entirety on youtube. He plays a zombie in the upcoming film, "Plan 9," which is a remake of "Plan 9 From Outer Space."
Young has also scored parts in "Minnows Biscuit Special," an action comedy, and appeared in several other films, including "Slice," "Deadlines," "Lake Effects" and "Back From War."
Young's second movie, "Midnight Matinee Psycho," is available at Amazon.com and Walmart.com.
Young is currently in post production of his latest film, "Psychotic State," and was signed by Asphyxiated Films earlier this year.
Young will also appear in Billy Sample's "Reunion 108" at Salem Valley 8, beginning Friday, Oct. 25. Sample of Salem played for the Braves, Yankees and Rangers in the 1970s and 80s, Young said.
"Family Property: Backwoods Killing Spree" was released on DVD Oct. 15 and is available at numerous websites, like Best Buy, Family Video, Kmart, Sears, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and Ebay. The DVD is also available at Barnes and Noble at Valley View.
