Third annual 'White Out' game is slated

Franklin County's home varsity football game against Pulaski County on Friday, Oct. 11 has been designated as the Eagles' third annual "White Out' game.

The Eagles' girls' basketball program is selling the game's official t-shirt.

These shirts can be purchased in the high school Student Center or at any local Dairy Queen or Bojangles restaurant for $10.


Football Club to meet tonight at FCHS

Franklin County Eagles Football Booster Club has scheduled its monthly meeting for tonight (Monday, Oct. 7).

The meeting is set for 6 p.m. in the lecture room of the Dorothy Phelps Student Center at Franklin County High School.

The public is welcome to attend.

Fleming sweeps BFMS in football

ROANOKE -- William Fleming swept a middle-school football doubleheader Wednesday over Benjamin Franklin Middle School.

The Colonels won the seventh-grade game, 36-8, and was victorious in the eighth-grade contest, 34-22.

Shane Grindstaff's five-yard touchdown run with 1:37 left in the game and a 2-point conversion dash by Jordan Mack accounted for the Eagles' points in the seventh-grade game.

BFMS's seventh-grade team is 0-5.

William Fleming, which led from start to finish, scored the first 14 points in the eighth-grade game.

BFMS recovered an on-side kick to start the second half and the Eagles scored on the ninth play of a drive on a seven-yard run by Grant Dickerson.

A successful 2-point conversion pass from quarterback Jonah Fitzgerald to Kaleb Smith pulled BFMS to within six points, 14-8.

William Fleming responded by returning the ensuing kickoff for a TD and a 20-8 advantage.

The Eagles (2-3-1) answered with an 11-play scoring drive, a march that was capped by Shaun Manns' four-yard TD run.

BFMS's 2-point conversion try failed. That left the Eagles six points in arrears, 20-14.

Once again, the Colonels returned the ensuing kickoff for a TD and a 2-point conversion run put William Fleming ahead by 14 points.

A turnover stopped the Eagles on their next drive with 5:55 left.

With 3:55 showing, the Colonels scored their final points by completing a bubble screen pass; the TD pushed the spread to 20 points, 34-14.

BFMS tallied its final points when Fitzgerald completed a six-yard TD pass to Nathan Brooks with 54 seconds left to complete an eight-play drive.

Nate Smith followed with a 2-point conversion run.

BFMS suffered its second straight loss.

BFMS's seventh-grade team completes its 2013 season Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Read Mountain Middle School. Kickoff is 5 p.m.

BFMS's eighth-grade squad entertains Read Mountain Thursday, Oct. 17 in its season finale. Kickoff is 5 p.m.


Quakers blank Panthers in volleyball

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Brittany DeCesare and Malikah French combined for 15 kills Thursday night to lead Guilford (N.C.) College to a 3-0 sweep of Ferrum College in a non-conference volleyball match.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-18 25-11.

DeCesare netted eight kills and French tallied seven to lead the Quakers (8-10), who compete in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).

Also, Taylor Whitley distributed 22 assists and collected 10 digs and Meredith Foscue registered 17 digs.

Ferrum (2-11) finished the match with 20 kills.

Rachel Stratton paced the Panthers with five kills and served a pair of aces.

Emily Danner passed out 16 assists and recorded six digs and Jessica Turner had 13 digs.

Ferrum returns to USA South Athletic Conference play Wednesday at home against Meredith (N.C.) College.

Match time at William P. Swartz Gymnasium is 7 p.m.


Northside sweeps BFMS in volleyball

Northside Middle School swept Benjamin Franklin Middle School, 2-0, in a Roanoke Valley Middle School District volleyball match Thursday at home.

Set scores were 25-16, 25-12.

Northside's victory is its second this season over BFMS.

For the Eagles, Logan Pasley served three aces, passed out three assists and collected a dig.

As a team, BFMS served seven aces, netted five kills, distributed five assists and tallied 11 digs.

BFMS returns to action today at home against Hidden Valley Middle School. Match time is 5 p.m.
