FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The USA South Athletic Conference has crowned a league champion in volleyball since 1981 and it has produced many great individual and team performances.
Many of the players who are responsible for those showings have been selected to the USA South's 50th Anniversary team, which was released Thursday.
Ferrum College began competing in the USA South in the sport in the fall of 1988 and the Panthers have been guided by four head coaches during their tenure in the league.
Twelve former Ferrum standouts, all of whom earned USA South accolades during their playing careers, have been named to the team.
Headlining the group are Lora Hicks, the only Ferrum player to garner All-America (honorable mention in 1991) accolades and all-region laurels in 1991 (first team) and 1992 (second team) and Jessica Flanagan, who is in her second year as the Panthers head coach.
Former Ferrum players Mindy (Altice) Bowman, Amy Robertson and Susan Wilson all were stars during their prep careers at Franklin County, are on the team. Bowman, who finished her college career with 1,981 kills, is in her fifth year as the Eagles' head coach.
Bowman, Flanagan (1,631) and Hicks (1,259) rank first, second and third in career kills.
Former FCHS star and head coach Amy Gibson, who played at Greensboro (N.C.) College, is one of 12 former Pride standouts selected.
Gibson is a former conference Player of the Year.
Also chosen are former Ferrum players Shermika Harris, Jan Kelley, Tamiko Martin, Kristi Persinger, Susan Reagan, Kellie Vardaro and Kia Williams.
Reagan is Ferrum's career leader in assists with 2,853.
Players from Averett University, Meredith (N.C.) College, Methodist (N.C.) University, North Carolina Wesleyan College and William Peace (N.C.) College also have been honored.
