The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a new telephone scam.
The scam is initiated by a phone call, stating that the caller is from the Mega Million Gaming and Lottery Company, according to Sgt. Phillip Young.
For individuals with caller ID, the phone call appears to originate in Seattle, Wash.
The caller advises that you are the second-place winner and your prize is $2.5 million and a 2013 Mercedes Benz E-Class, Young said.
The caller will then instruct you to go to CVS and purchase a Green Dot money card for $150. The caller then wants you to call him back with the 14-digit number from the Green Dot card.
"According to the caller, there is a team in this area ready to immediately deliver your check and vehicle once they have received and confirmed the number," Young said.
But some callers tell you that the prizes will be delivered by UPS and escorted by the United States Marshal's Service.
"If residents receive a phone call of this nature, they are encouraged to hang up the phone and not engage the caller in conversation," Young added.
