Ferrum College throwing a huge party

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

Ferrum College has certainly come a very long way in 100 years to the benefit of countless students, their families and Franklin County residents. The college has observed its 100th birthday this year in many ways, but this weekend is the official party.

The party is called the Centennial Celebration Homecoming, chock full of activities Friday through Sunday, including Ferrum's Homecoming football game on Saturday. From concerts to picnics to theater performances and even fireworks, everyone is invited to the big celebration, and there is literally something for all.

The weekend kicks off Friday at 4 p.m. with an outdoor festival, complete with musical performances, a parade and barbecue. Everything is free, except the barbecue dinner, which costs $10 for adults and $7 for children (older than 5).

With performers like Kerosene Willy and 14-Karat Gold Band, the music will please all. The TAMS will cap off the evening, followed by fireworks over Adams Lake.

Get out the running or walking shoes Saturday morning for the Panther Tracks 5-K Run/Walk, which benefits the Saint James United Methodist Church Food Bank and Cystic Fibrosis. Registration takes place at 8 a.m. in Hart Plaza on campus and the race begins at 9 a.m. Race-day registration is $20.

Other activities Saturday include the burial of a time capsule, canoe float, rock-climbing tower trip and several athletic events. To mark the Ferrum College Centennial, a treasure trove of history will be buried in a Centennial Time Capsule at 12:30 p.m. on the Franklin Hall lawn.

Also on Saturday, Ferrum College Outdoor Adventure staff is hosting a morning canoe float around Chapman Pond on campus and a rock climbing tower trip. The official 100-year birthday party is set at Bassett Field from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., just before to the homecoming football game. A picnic will also be available for $8 for adults, $4 for children, and free for children 5 and under. For those who plan to attend, please call the Alumni Office for the required parking permit by calling 540-365-4216.

The Panthers tackle Greensboro College at 2 p.m. Tickets to the game cost $5.

Following the Centennial Celebration Tailgate, the Panthers will take on Greensboro College for the Homecoming Football Game at 2 p.m. in W.B. Adams Stadium. Game tickets will be available at the gate for $5 each.

A special Centennial Hike is set for Sunday morning, and a worship service in honor of the Ferrum College Centennial will be held in Vaughn Chapel at 10 a.m. followed by other activities.

Professor Emeritus Rex Stephenson will close out the festivities with a matinee performance at 2 p.m. in Sale Theatre of "The Mark Twain Show." Stephenson is the creator of the Jack Tale Players and the Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre. More information is available about these and other events at www.ferrum.edu.

Please make plans to attend any or all of these events. Help celebrate the legacy, as well as the bright future, of Ferrum College.
