A barbecue dinner and music fundraiser to benefit Faithful Friend Ministries is set for Saturday, Oct. 5 at Boones Chapel Church of the Brethren at 4:30 p.m.
Jeremy Adkins of Penhook started Faithful Friend Ministries in 2011 in hopes of helping local families who have fallen on hard times.
"In 2011, I was told of a mother and son who were looking for a place to live because their time at a shelter was coming to an end," said Adkins. "In helping them, I realized there were a lot of other people with similar circumstances that could use a helping hand."
Faithful Friend Ministries is a non-profit organization that helps families with meals, utilities, unexpected medical expenses and rent.
"I get help from some of my family and friends," said Adkins, "but I figured if I could get enough community support, I could help more than one or two families."
The ministry also helps families at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
"I received a list of those in need from Snow Creek Elementary last year, and we got together some resources and provided meals and gifts for the children," said Adkins.
Adkins said the name "Faithful Friend" came to him one night in a dream.
"I wrote it down, but had no idea why I dreamed that name," said Adkins.
After helping the woman and her son find a place to live, Adkins said he knew the name of his organization had to be called "Faithful Friend Ministries."
Saturday's fundraiser will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a barbecue dinner, complete with desert.
Donald Ashby and the Singing Directors, along with The Spiritualaires, will be the musical entertainment from 6 to 8 p.m.
Free will donations will be accepted.
Families in need of assistance can call Adkins at (540) 576-2986 or (540) 588-4914.
The church also accepts donations of non-perishable food items. Anyone wishing to donate food items can call the church office at (540) 576-2779 to set up a drop-off time.
