A Roanoke man pleaded guilty Monday in Roanoke County Circuit Court to the 2010 murder of 18-year-old Cara Marie Holley of Roanoke whose body was buried in Franklin County under planks and plywood on a logging trail off Promise Lane.

Carey Shane Padgett, 24, pleaded guilty to two counts of capital murder, as well as abduction and robbery. He also pleaded "no contest" to three more counts of capital murder, abduction with the intent to defile, forcible sodomy and rape, according to court records.

Padgett faces a maximum sentence of death.

A search warrant served in July 2010 said that Padgett admitted to Roanoke police detectives that Padgett "choked and kicked and beat" Holley with a tire iron. He also told police that he wrapped her body in a sleeping bag and buried it under planks and plywood he found on a trail off Promise Lane in Franklin County.

Once he confessed, Padgett led Roanoke police to a secluded field at 5039 Bandy Road, where he said he took Holley, whom he dated in 2009, so he could kill her because he wanted to take her vehicle, a 2008 Kia Sorento, the warrant said.

Although Padgett said he drove Holley to the field in his vehicle, a 2000 Ford, he told detectives he needed a car that was "in better shape" before his journey "out of Roanoke," the warrant said.

After disposing of Holley's body, Padgett told police he returned home, showered and changed before he loaded Holley's vehicle, which was parked at his residence, with his belongings, the warrant said.

He also admitted to stealing her driver's license and credit card, which he used to purchase gasoline.

Padgett attempted to use the card again at a Roanoke Walmart, but the card was declined, according to the warrant.

Padgett was stopped in Holley's vehicle by Officer Andy Pendleton with the Rocky Mount Police Department. Padgett was arrested at the time on an outstanding warrant from Roanoke for allegedly using Holly's credit card.

Officers located Holley's body about a mile down Promise lane, off Cassell Road, near the edge of a trail.
