The Glade Hill Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) will celebrate its 50th anniversary Saturday, Sept. 21 with an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be a free BBQ lunch and gifts.

Glade Hill VFD was formed in September 1963 by Bobby Hubbard, Ronnie Shelton, Elton Cundiff and Victor Tyree.

Tyree was killed in the line of duty in December 1965 when the fire truck he was in overturned en route to a fire at Mack Cundiff's store in the Scruggs area. The store was a total loss.

Five other charter members include Henry Brown, Adolphus Ramsey, Ward Finney, Gus Law and the department's first Fire Chief Thomas Board.

Cundiff is the only charter member still running calls with the department.

The department's first fire truck was an old tanker, according to acting Fire Chief Allen Richards.

"They bought their first brand new truck in 1966," said Richards. "It was a 1966 Ford Pumper."

The Glade Hill VFD currently receives up to five calls a week.

"It just depends," said Richards. "Some weeks, we might get up to eight calls, and some weeks, we get no calls at all. We just have to be ready to help at all times."

The Glade Hill VFD lost longtime Fire Chief Rodney Cundiff in 2011 when he lost his battle with cancer after serving the department for 46 years, including 30 years as chief.

Other past chiefs of the department have included Thomas Board, Henry Brown and Mike Perdue.

The department has 26 lifetime members who have served more than 25 years, with 15 of them still currently running calls with the department.

The 36 current members of the Glade Hill VFD include Jarrett Adkins, Mark Adkins, Henry Allman, Kenneth Allman, Tommy Ayers, Steve Bowyer, Chuckie Craighead, Barry Cundiff, Carl Cundiff, Elton Cundiff, Ned Cundiff, Randall Cundiff, Steven David, Brandon Hambrick, Chris Hambrick, Jeff Holland, Jim Holland, Eric Ingram, Jared Mandy, T.W. McCall, Ben Metts and Steve Metts.

Also Brandon Nichols, David Perdue, George Pruitt, Allen Richards, G.A. Richards, James Richards, Mike Smith, Scott Smith, Scotty Smith, Ryan Thompson, Sammy Weddle, Tim Wilcox, Joey Willie and Lisa Willie, who is currently the only female member of the department.
