Franklin County residents will see a new fee on their personal property bills when they receive them in the mail within the next week.
But they may be relieved to know the annual ritual of scraping decals from their windshield is gone.
Last year, the board of supervisors eliminated the annual vehicle decal and instead will charge a vehicle license fee so that the county will not lose this source of revenue. The fee will be included with the personal property bill to eliminate a duplicate mailing.
That means residents will no longer be required to buy a decal for their vehicle, motorcycle, trailer or antique vehicle.
The fee this year will be a reduced amount because the amount the county can charge cannot be more than the annual or one-year fee charged for a vehicle registration by the state.
Residents will not be required to buy a decal in April 2014 but will continue to pay the vehicle license fee in December 2014 and in subsequent years in December.
Fees for 2013 are as follows:
•Motor vehicles: $15.75
•Trailers with a gross vehicle weight over 1,500 pounds: $8.50
•Antique vehicles: $8.51
These fees will be included in this year's personal property tax bills.
