A Ferrum woman was given a five-year suspended sentence Tuesday in Franklin County Circuit Court for stealing items from a department store in Rocky Mount where she was employed.
Misty Dawn Knapp, 21, was placed on probation for two years and was ordered by the court to be of good behavior for eight years.
Knapp also must pay restitution of $889.45 to the store from which the items were stolen.
Knapp, a college student, was also ordered to continue her education.
A review of Knapp's progress will be held on Aug. 22, 2014.
Prosecutor Patrick Nix said Knapp took items, including soft drinks, toys and a leaf blower, on more than one occasion in November 2012.
Knapp would clock out after her shift, take items off the shelves and put them in reusable tote bags, Nix said. Then she would leave the store through the lawn and garden exit, where she was less likely to be observed.
Spotted by another employee, Knapp was followed by that employee and reported, Nix said. A review of store video confirmed Knapp did not pay for the items.
