The Horse & Hound Wine Festival will be held at Johnson's Orchards -- Peaks of Otter Winery on Saturday, July 13 with entertainment for all ages.

The ninth annual event benefits several area charities, including Commonwealth Search and Rescue, Brook Hill Farm Horse Rescue and All American Mutt Rescue.  Touted as the most unusual wine festival on the East Coast, numerous wineries will be represented, including Hickory Hill, Lake Anna, Peaks of Otter, Rebec, Savoy Lee, Tomahawk and Wintergreen.

The event will feature music, arts and crafts, food and wine tasting like other festivals, but this festival also includes numerous horse and dog events throughout the day.

There will be a "Kiddie Korral" for entertainment of youngsters with stick horse races, face painting and pony rides.

Dog events will include a section for dog tricks, a lure course, which is a race where dogs chase a white cloth "rabbit" tied to a string driven by pulleys around the track, and the muskrat race wherein an artificial lure is pulled from one side of the pond to the other with dogs swimming to catch it.

The winner in each of several divisions will receive a trophy. People can let their dogs participate in all of the events.

Always popular are the horse events starting with the patriotic presentation of the colors on horseback and followed later by a parade of horses and other horse events put on by Saddle Soar Equitainment. There will be lots of farm animals.

The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., rain or shine
