Post 6 Juniors top Big Island Post 217

Monday, June 24, 2013

FOREST -- Paced by the pitching performance of Braxton Wheeler, Rocky Mount Post 6 team defeated Big Island Post 217, 3-1, Saturday in a District 9 American Legion Juniors baseball game at Forest Middle School.

Wheeler tossed a complete-game, four-hitter for Post 6 (2-0), which returned to the diamond after a long, weather-related layoff.

Wheeler's effort was highlighted by 11 strikeouts. He yielded only two walks.

Wheeler lost his bid for a shutout in the last of the fifth inning when he surrendered a two-out walk and a triple before retiring the side.

Post 6, which led from start to finish, scored the game's initial run in the top of the first inning when Cameron Walker came home on a ground out by Tanner Talley.

The count was 1-0 until the top of the fifth when Post 6's Hunter Barbour doubled with two outs to drive in Brice Arrington.

Leading 2-1, Post 6 manufactured an insurance run in the top of the sixth. A one-out single by Logan Lewis brought Jared Layman home with the game's final run.

Post 6 returns to action Tuesday against Lynchburg Post 16. Game time is 7 p.m. at Heritage High School.
